About this site
In 2001 we purchased a parcel of land that overlooks the Avonriver and the Minas Basin to build our retirement home. I was fascinated by the gypsum ships and the effects of tide swings here on the Basin. Being a former Navy man, ships were more than a passing interest. I decided to record on a website the gypsum ship traffic as they steamed by on the way to Hantsport for gypsum. This led to frequent visits to Hantsport to photograph their arrivals and underway with the load of gypsum. The photos cover a time period from 2006 to 2011. This Web site is a collection of my photographs of those ships and the basic operations of gypsum mining here along the shores and on the waters of the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia, Canada.
